In this post we’ll take a close look at how Solar Hot Water Systems in Brisbane work and some of the benefits you can expect from them…

Solar Hot Water Systems: What are they and how do they work?

There are three different types of solar hot water systems. In this post we’ll briefly explain how they work. More information can be found in this previous post. When you invest in a Solar Hot Water System in Brisbane, you have a choice of two different collector types, and a third option which uses a heat pump;

Flat plate collectors

Flat plate collectors are the most commonly used type of collector, and are used in conjunction with a tank which is mounted on the roof or a tank mounted on the ground. The flat plate collectors are finished with a glass plate, beneath which sits a network of copper pipes. These are covered by a layer of horizontal fins which absorb more heat. The solar energy heats the copper which in turn heats the water which is fed to the roof-mounted water storage tank or fed down to a storage tank on the ground via a circulation pump.

Evacuated tube collectors

These systems use the power of vacuums to insulate the water in your copper pipes. The copper pipes in these systems are round rather than flat, which enables them to absorb more heat. They can be used in conjunction with a roof mounted tank, or a ground mounted tank via a circulation pump which sends water to a storage tank within your home. When the temperature of the water in the tank drops below a certain point, an electric pump sends it back to the pipes to be reheated.

Heat pump systems

Heat pump systems use solar power in a different way. They do not have collectors, instead pulling solar heat from the air and using it to increase your water’s temperature. This isn’t just something that can be done on blisteringly hot summer days, these systems can draw enough heat from the air to keep your water hot even during the winter.

Heat pump systems are not 100% solar powered, however, they only use around 25% as much electricity as a conventional electric water heater system.
